England’s squad flew to Germany on Monday afternoon ahead of Euro 2024, which begins later this week.

Tom Heaton has been called up to the England squad as a training goalkeeper for this summer’s European Championships.

The Manchester United stopper won’t be available to play in matches but will be around the group to provide support for goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.

“I am really pleased Tom has agreed to join us in Germany,” Gareth Southgate said when the news was announced. “Experience tells us that a tournament can put a lot of demand on our goalkeeping group led by Martyn Margetson. Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan, Aaron and Dean.

"Off the field as someone we all know well, he will add to the positive environment we are always looking to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support in making this happen.”

Heaton has previously earned three England caps and was part of the Three Lions’ Euro 2016 squad. He last played for United in a Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest in February 2023 and is in talks with the club over possibly signing a new contract when his current deal expires at the end of the month.

“Incredibly honoured to be asked by Gareth to join the squad,” the 38-year-old wrote on social media. “To get the call to go to a major tournament, to help in anyway I can and pass on my experience is a proud moment. We have a great squad, I’m excited and can't wait to join the group.”

The Three Lions jetted off to Germany on Monday and begin their Euro 2024 group campaign against Serbia on Sunday night. England also face Denmark and Slovenia in Group C.
