Manchester United are hoping to sell Mason Greenwood this month ahead of what is expected to be a busy transfer window for the club.

The Red Devils are planning for wholesale changes under the new Ineos regime with a plethora of Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad available for transfer if a sufficient offer is received. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Antony and Jadon Sancho could be allowed to leave in order to raise funds.

Greenwood is a player United are keen to move on following his loan spell at Getafe this season that saw him score 10 goals. That he is an academy graduate and will count as pure profit in terms of Profit and Sustainability Rules is a plus, while his controversial past is another important matter, following police charges of attempted rape, controlling, coercive behaviour and assault, which were dropped in February 2023.

United considered reintegrating the forward back into the squad last year, a process that resulted in fan protests and a social media backlash. It was ultimately decided to send Greenwood on loan, and while a potential return or a second loan have not been ruled out, he is expected to permanently depart this window.

There is significant interest in Italy, with reports this week indicating that Juventus are Greenwood’s preferred destination and that personal terms have already been agreed. That United hope to wrap up a sale in the coming weeks is perhaps an indication that the process is not in its infancy.

The 22-year-old last played for the Red Devils in January 2022 and has attracted interest from across Europe and hass been linked with moves to Fenerbahce, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Napoli.

United have identified Ivan Toney and Joshua Zirkzee as possible replacements for Greenwood, while fellow striker Anthony Martial also departed the club earlier this window. It leaves United with just one senior centre-forward in Rasmus Hojlund, although youngster Ethan Wheatley played a fringe role towards the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the club have pressed forward with plans to make Jarrad Branthwaite their first summer transfer and have agreed personal terms with the player’s representatives. Now it’s a case of agreeing a fee with Everton for the centre-back.
