Luke Shaw looks set to miss England’s second match of the European Championship after he was not involved in team training on Wednesday morning.

England could secure qualification to the knockout stages of Euro 2024 when they face Denmark tomorrow, having already defeated Serbia in their opening match of the competition. However, it looks like they will have to do so without Shaw again, with the left-back unlikely to be involved for the match in Frankfurt.

The Manchester United left-back was the only player missing from England's pre-match training session, with 25 players taking part in the exercise while he 'continued an individualised programme elsewhere.'

Shaw's absence once again raises the question why manager Gareth Southgate didn't select another recognised left-back for the tournament, with Kieran Trippier expected to keep his starting place on the left side of defence.

England will hope Shaw is fit enough to be involved for their final group game against Slovenia next week, which could effectively be a dead-rubber match if they have already qualified for the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Shaw has not featured since he was forced off against Luton Town in February with a muscular issue and the 28-year-old recently admitted he was not fully fit and should not have played in the match.

Southgate suggested Shaw was in contention to feature against Serbia at the weekend, but speaking to Dutch TV club manager Erik ten Hag claimed he would not be fit until after the group stages. "Luke Shaw will start playing once England get out of the group stages," the Dutchman told NOS.
