England defeated Serbia 1-0 in their opening match of the European Championship in Germany.

Manchester United star Luke Shaw missed England training on Monday as Gareth Southgate's side stepped up preparations for their second game of the European Championship.

England began their Euro 2024 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Serbia on Sunday night, with the players involved in the match taking part in a light recovery session ahead of Thursday's clash with Denmark.

Shaw, who has not played since February, was also involved in a fitness session while all the other England squad players yet to feature in the tournament took to the training pitches for a more rigorous training exercise. Kobbie Mainoo, who featured from the bench in the final few moments of the Serbia win, was also involved in the outdoor training session that was led by manager Gareth Southgate.

United full-back Shaw has not featured since he was forced off against Luton Town with a muscular issue, with the 28-year-old recently admitting he was not fully fit and should not really have played in the match.

Gareth Southgate had suggested Shaw was in contention to feature against Serbia at the weekend, but speaking to Dutch TV yesterday, club manager Erik ten Hag claimed he would not be fit until after the group stages. "Luke Shaw will start playing once England get out of the group stages," the Dutchman told NOS.

It remains to be seen when exactly Shaw will be back in contention for his national side, but the fact he was not involved on Monday suggests he might miss the upcoming match with Denmark as well.
