Manchester United are still in talks with veteran duo Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton about possible new contracts.

Evans, 36, and Heaton, 38, are both officially out of contract on Monday with discussions ongoing about potential extensions heading into the new season.

United confirmed when their retained list was released at the start of the month that they were open to keeping both academy products at the club, though it always seemed unlikely they would agree to new terms until the managerial situation was clarified.

Erik ten Hag will be backed with a new contract heading into the new campaign and his continuation could be the deciding factor in whether or not Evans and Heaton each commit to at least another year at Old Trafford.

Evans only returned to United to work on his fitness after he was released by Leicester a year ago, but ended up becoming an important squad player across the season. The experienced centre-back made 30 appearances in total, including starts against Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal. A month ago, the Northern Ireland international admitted it 'wouldn’t be a difficult conversation’ if United wanted him to stay for another year.

It would likely be a tougher decision for Heaton, who might only have one last realistic opportunity to play regular football in his playing career. The England goalkeeper has played just three times in three years since returning to United and has no intention of retiring just yet. Luton Town wanted to sign him following their promotion to the Premier League a year ago, but Ten Hag wasn't prepared to lose his experience at a time when two new 'keepers were being brought to the club.
