‘There is no excuse’ - Neville makes assessment of Ten Hag decision for Brentford vs Man Utd

Gary Neville believes there is ‘no excuse’ for Manchester United as they look to improve on their disappointing start to the season.

Erik ten Hag’s men were beaten all too comfortably at home by Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, getting off to a disappointing start.

United fans are furios with the club after a slow summer which was seen the Red Devils fail to replace departing stars such as Paul Pogba.

There is still time remaining in the transfer window, but while other teams have bought efficiently and quickly, United have struggled to complete deals.

Still, United are expected to perform even without their new additions, and currently, they are struggling to manage it.

The Red Devils lost 4-0 at Brentford, but before that game Sky Sports pundit Neville said he was happy with the starting line-up.

“This feels like a massive game, just two games in. Not neccesarily for Erik ten Hag, but just for the club, in terms of building confidence,” he said

“It’s just guaranteed goals, compared to the other ones (strikers). Last week, they played without a centre forward, and what I like about [Cristiano} Ronaldo up front today is that they have [Christian] Eriksen and [Bruno] Fernandes in behind, so there should be no shortage of clever passes up to him, or passes through.

“Then you have the two wide players who really need to run past him all the time. We know Cristiano doesn’t run the channels or make movements behind as you would like.

“But what he has in [Marcus] Rashford and [Jadon] Sancho should be willing runners to make sure he has chances in the box.

“From an attacking point of view, I’ve got no concerns. United should be good on the ball in midfield with Fernandes and Eriksen.

“There is no excuse for United, in this heat in particular, to keep the ball and have a lot of possession, and they will have to because Brentford have a lot of physical strength in their team.”
