Storm Franklin: how a community rallied round to help residents at threat of flooding in Didsbury

It was a worrying weekend for hundreds of householders in Manchester after flood warnings were put in place on Sunday.

The Environment Agency issued alerts - indicating a possible danger to life - for 430 properties in Didsbury and Northenden after the River Mersey reached record levels.

Reception stations were set up in South Manchester to support those who needed to leave their home, including Didsbury Mosque.

The Environment Agency has since removed the Severe Flood Warning for the River Mersey following intensive efforts overnight to manage flood waters around the Didsbury Basin.

A Flood Alert remains in place in the Disbury and Northenden areas and this is likely going to remain in place through the week as inclement weather continues and while the Didsbury Flood Basin is able to fully drain.

Skilled management of the basin meant that no formal evacuation of homes was required.
