Labour has lost overall control of Oldham Council amid claims of a ‘Gaza backlash’.

Going into the polls with a majority of just one, they lost seven seats and gained two with the war, and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s stance on it, understood to be a major issue for many voters. Nyla Ibrahim won standing as an Independent in Werneth having quit Labour over the issue in the run up to the polls.

The council is now in no overall control and Labour will need to make a deal with smaller parties to stay in power or risk being ousted. Overall the council is now made up of 27 Labour councillors, nine Liberal Democrats, eight Conservatives and 16 Independents. More than 100 candidates were vying for votes on Thursday with a third of seats up for grabs this time around.

Labour party national campaigner Pat McFadden told BBC Breakfast: “I do think that’s (Gaza) been a factor in some places, I don’t think there’s any point in denying that. It does get raised, and I understand why people have strong feelings about that.”

But he added: “In addition to the Middle East issue which you mentioned there are specific very local factors in Oldham which have knocked it out of line with the Labour gains we’ve been seeing in local elections.”
